Frostburg State University is a four-year university located on a 260 acre campus in Frostburg, Maryland, in western Maryland, and is part of the University System of Maryland.

History

The school was founded in 1898 under the name State Normal School #2 and began teaching its first class in 1902. Its original mission was to train teachers for the Maryland public school system. In 1935, the school was renamed State Teachers' College at Frostburg and began offering a four-year degree program leading to a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education degree. The school was again renamed in 1963, this time as Frostburg State College. Frostburg received university status in 1987 thus being renamed to what it's today. The university has a growing number of programs. Business and education are the most popular majors.
Frostburg has colleges in education, business, and liberal arts and sciences, and, in addition to the baccalaureate, awards master's degrees in both arts and sciences.

FSU publishes a 12-page weekly newspaper called The Bottom Line. The staff is responsible for delivering the most current news, sports, and entertainment to the readers as well as publishing local and national advertising. The publication has been nationally recognized since 2007 by the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) and also by College Publisher Inc. All current and past articles since 2006, including some that didn't make it to the print version, are available at the Bottom Line's website.

Appalachian Festival

The Frostburg State University Appalachian Festival is held annually in September on the campus of Frostburg State University in historic Frostburg, Maryland. The festival features regional music, dance, food and crafts, extensive children's activities, and a number of hands on workshops and educational programs featuring local history, culture, and environment. A sampling of the Festival's offerings includes:
Traditional Old-Time and Bluegrass Music
   Beekeeping and Goat-milking Demonstrations
   Dance and Music Workshops
   Woodworking and Instrument Making
   Quilting, Spinning, and Weaving
   A variety of local food

Campus police

The Frostburg State University Police Department (FSUPD) is the primary law enforcement agency of the Frostburg State University servicing the population of students, faculty, and visitors on the 260 acres of campus property and adjacent streets.
   The jurisdiction of the FSUPD lies entirely within the municipal limits of the town of Frostburg, Maryland. The current Chief of Police is Brian Shanley. The FSUPD has 16 sworn officers (not including the chief) and five civilian communications personnel.
